MAN AND MOONSHINE
Yes, it is only too true. I begin to be afraid that the
villains will really contaminate the moon.
C.S.Lewis: Letter to Sister Penelope C.S.M.V. 21/10/1946
"I kind of hope that somebody goes up there one of these days and cleans (my footprints) up."
You, with your boots in all that silver lore,
did you feel the flinching of the tide?
The ocean scuttle from the pebbled shore?
Did you see Diana run and hide,
fleet and sure of foot in billowing gown?
Or did she at your dull sublunary form
stare in disdain and archly put you down?
I am a goddess, ‘excellently bright!’
You, a lowly creature of the night.
Your one small step by modern mortals praised
to me is utter hubris blind and crazed.
And so eclipsed by that fair lady’s side,
did you feel the ebbing of your pride?
She a heavenly being, shining, pure…
and you so lumpish, earthly and obscure.
Could it be that lunacy prevailed?
What-on-earth were you thinking? Did you reflect
before we saw that sacred shrine hobnailed?
